Now, over 200 US colleges are offering more than $15 million per year in scholarships for the top esports players, and university teams can earn millions more in tournament prizes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-762\" src=\"https:\/\/aca.gg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/04\/overwatch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aca.gg\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/04\/overwatch.jpg 790w, https:\/\/aca.gg\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/04\/overwatch-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/aca.gg\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/04\/overwatch-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aca.gg\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/04\/overwatch-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aca.gg\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/04\/overwatch-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/aca.gg\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/04\/overwatch-580x387.jpg 580w, https:\/\/aca.gg\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/04\/overwatch-320x213.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\n<figcaption>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Harrisburg Storm after winning the TESPA National Championship in Overwatch (NACE)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>History of College Esports<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p>College esports in the United States began as early as 2009 when the Collegiate Starleague (CSL) was formed as the first official intercollegiate gaming organization in the world, with 25 schools participating in their inaugural competition of the game\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/StarCraft:_Brood_War\"><strong><em>StarCraft: Brood War<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, at which the UC Berkeley team took home the victory.\u00a0Since then CSL has expanded into a variety of games (15 titles in 2019) and it claims to host over 1,800 colleges and universities worldwide with 55,000 cumulative players actively competing in their league.<\/p>\n\n<p>Smaller four-year colleges were the first to recognize the recruiting and student life potential of esports. Larger universities came next, and now two-year community colleges are establishing esports teams and programs. \u201cThey\u2019re the third wave,\u201d said Michael Brooks, executive director of the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE).\u00a0 NACE is an American collegiate esports association established in 2016.\u00a0 It currently has over 170 member schools and over 5,000 participating college players.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-358\" src=\"https:\/\/aca.gg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/07\/NACE-1024x425.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"106\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aca.gg\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/07\/NACE-1024x425.png 1024w, https:\/\/aca.gg\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/07\/NACE-600x249.png 600w, https:\/\/aca.gg\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/07\/NACE-300x125.png 300w, https:\/\/aca.gg\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/07\/NACE-768x319.png 768w, https:\/\/aca.gg\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/07\/NACE.png 1562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though\u00a0<em><strong>Fortnite<\/strong><\/em>is the most played game among high school players in the United States, <em><strong>League of Legends<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><strong>Overwatch<\/strong><\/em>are the most popular titles for U.S. collegiate esports teams. Both\u00a0<em><strong>LoL<\/strong><\/em>and\u00a0<em><strong>Overwatch<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0have official college leagues sanctioned by the videogame\u2019s publishers.<\/p>\n\n<p>Each college fields teams from a number of different game titles, and this can be as few as two or three, but some colleges support up to seven or eight different game teams, including such popular titles as <strong><em>Rocket League<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Super Smash Bros<\/em><\/strong>., <strong><em>PUBG<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Call of Duty<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>CS: GO<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why College?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p>Among college students in America, 51 percent think being an esports athlete is a viable career option. This is proving to be true: The 2018\u00a0<em><strong>League of Legends<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0World Champion\u00adship attracted more viewers than the Super Bowl and the NCAA Final Four combined.\u00a0 Viewership is huge, and the expanding esports industry needs educated people to fill the positions needed to keep the business going, and growing.<\/p>\n\n<p>But, esports athletes attend college in America to study a wide variety of subjects, not just esports. \u201cThis is not just about gaming,\u201d said Jeanne Weber, senior higher education strategist at Dell Technologies. \u201cEngaging students in esports can help them build critical thinking skills, encourage teamwork and innovation, and promote self-directed learning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Esports Scholarships<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p>Just like athletes from traditional sports, college esports players in America now have access to scholarships.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>According to NCSA, one of the leading esports recruiters in the U.S., esports scholarships are awarded on a school-by-school basis. The majority are partial scholarships and range from US$500 to US$8,000 per year. The average esports scholarship student receives $4,800 in tuition awards a year, according to NACE.<\/p>\n\n<p>Now though several schools are beginning to offer full-tuition, and even full-ride scholarships. Harrisburg University\u2014which won ESPN\u2019s inaugural Collegiate Esports Championship in May 2019\u2014became the first college esports program to award\u00a0full ride scholarships to its entire 16-player roster\u00a0in 2018.<\/p>\n\n<p>For colleges that have <strong><em>League of Legends<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Heathstone<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>Overwatch<\/strong><\/em> and <strong><em>StarCraft II<\/em><\/strong> teams, scholarship money comes directly from the developers themselves, not the college.\u00a0 TESPA, for example, is a network of collegiate esports clubs that partners with Blizzard to provide scholarship opportunities for students who play on a <strong><em>Hearthstone<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Overwatch,<\/em><\/strong> or <strong><em>StarCraft II<\/em><\/strong> team.\u00a0 Riot Games provides scholarship money directly to colleges that have competitive <strong><em>League of Legends<\/em><\/strong> teams.<\/p>\n\n<p>At the University of California Irvine (UCI), scholarship recipients on varsity <strong><em>Overwatch <\/em><\/strong>and <strong><em>League of Legends<\/em><\/strong> teams receive USD$6,000, while substitutes and junior varsity players each receive US$1,000 per year.\u00a0 Additionally, UCI esports recently announced that it will offer US$6,000 scholarships to <strong><em>Super Smash Ultimate <\/em><\/strong>players.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1f99a23 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1f99a23\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7ad1f0c\" data-id=\"7ad1f0c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4da9e85 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"4da9e85\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-5692a34 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"5692a34\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-622e812\" data-id=\"622e812\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22fdf82 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"22fdf82\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Next Post<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In our next post we\u2019ll talk about career opportunities in esports and what U.S. colleges are doing to help students get great jobs in this fast-growing industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">About ACA<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ACA is an Asian-based sports and esports consultancy that guides student athletes and their families through the complexities of the US college recruiting process.
